Study on Electron Density Anomalies Possibly Related to Earthquakes Based on CSES Observations

This research examines the correlation between seismic activity and variations in ionospheric electron density (Ne) using data from Langmuir probe (LAP) onboard China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) during nighttime. Statistical analysis of Ms ≥ 6.8 earthquakes that occurred globally August 2018 March 2023 is conducted, as well 6.0 same period, quartile method for fixed revisiting orbits. The main conclusions are that: (1) larger magnitude earthquake, more anomalous phenomena appear; (2) anomalies on east side epicenter significantly higher than those west side, Northern Hemisphere mostly distributed southward epicenter, while Southern northward epicenter; (3) appear with a frequency several specific time intervals, including day earthquake (likely co-seismic effect) 2, 7, 11 days before (possible precursor candidates); (4) 15 over past five years, Ne mainly southwest highest observed 5 there were continuous 9 earthquake. study concludes Ne, measured by CSES, can play fundamental role studying earthquake-related disturbances.
